XPeng was founded in 2014 by He Xiaopeng, a prominent Chinese internet entrepreneur who had previously co-founded UCWeb, a mobile browser company acquired by Alibaba. The company's approach was shaped by its founder's technology background: XPeng would compete not on manufacturing scale but on software sophistication and intelligent driving capabilities. The name is a direct reference to the founder, reflecting a personal commitment to the company's success.
XPeng's first vehicle, the G3 SUV, launched in 2018 and established a solid foundation in China's competitive EV SUV market. The company quickly followed with the P7 sedan in 2020, which became XPeng's defining model. The P7's combination of sleek styling, competitive range, and advanced driver assistance features made it one of the best-selling Chinese EVs in the premium segment, outperforming initial sales expectations.
XPeng's focus on advanced driver assistance systems set it apart from many competitors. The XPILOT system, first introduced on the P7, offered highway autonomous driving capabilities including lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and automated lane changes. Subsequent software updates expanded functionality and improved reliability, with XPeng positioning itself as a leader in production ADAS deployment among Chinese manufacturers.
The G9 SUV, launched in 2022, represented XPeng's push into the high-end premium segment. It introduced an 800-volt architecture enabling ultra-fast charging and the latest generation XPILOT 4.0 system. The company continues to develop its technology portfolio, with the XNGP (XPeng Navigation Guided Pilot) system aiming for city-level autonomous driving capabilities. XPeng has expanded into Europe, entering markets including Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
XPeng's 800-volt silicon carbide platform, first deployed in the G9, enables charging rates of up to 480 kW. This allows the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 15 minutes under optimal conditions, significantly reducing charging time compared to 400-volt architectures.
The XPILOT system was one of the first production ADAS platforms in China to offer Navigate on Pilot functionality on highways, automatically handling lane changes, overtaking slower vehicles, and navigating interchanges with minimal driver intervention.
The XNGP system represents XPeng's city-level autonomous driving technology. It combines lidar, high-definition cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and ultrasonic sensors with a centralized processing architecture. The system can handle complex urban driving scenarios including unprotected turns, traffic light recognition, and pedestrian avoidance without relying on high-definition pre-mapped routes.
