Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Elon Musk joining as lead investor and chairman in 2004 and later becoming CEO. The company was named after inventor Nikola Tesla. The first Tesla vehicle, the Roadster (2008), was a two-seat sports car based on the Lotus Elise chassis but powered by a lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor.
The Roadster established Tesla as a serious EV manufacturer and proved that electric cars could be fast and desirable. It was followed by the Model S sedan in 2012. The Model S received near-universal acclaim for its range, performance, and large touchscreen interface, and it effectively created the modern premium EV segment.
Tesla has since expanded its lineup with the Model X SUV (2015), the Model 3 mass-market sedan (2017), and the Model Y compact SUV (2020). It has also developed the Cybertruck pickup (2023), the Tesla Semi (2022), and the second-generation Roadster (announced but not yet in production as of 2025).

The Tesla Model S (2012) was the first production EV with a range of over 300 miles (EPA), achieved through a floor-mounted battery pack that kept the center of gravity low and provided structural rigidity. It also introduced the 17-inch vertical touchscreen that eliminated nearly all physical buttons.
Tesla developed a proprietary Supercharger network beginning in 2012, which remains the largest proprietary fast-charging network globally. In 2023, Tesla began opening the Supercharger network to other manufacturers using the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector that Tesla originally developed.
Over-the-air software updates were pioneered in the automotive industry by Tesla, allowing the company to add features, improve performance, and fix bugs remotely after the vehicle was delivered — a capability that most legacy automakers have only recently begun to match.

The Gigafactory concept, starting with the Nevada Gigafactory in 2016, vertically integrated battery cell production into Tesla manufacturing. The 4680 battery cell format (46mm diameter, 80mm height) was introduced in 2020 with claims of five times the energy and six times the power of the previous 2170 cell, though production ramp has been slower than initially projected.
