Rivian was founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe as Mainstream Motors, later renamed Rivian. The company initially planned to produce an efficient gasoline-powered coupe, the R1, but shifted focus to electric adventure vehicles — trucks and SUVs designed for outdoor recreation. Rivian operated quietly for over a decade, developing technology and raising private capital before publicly revealing its plans in 2018.
At the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, Rivian unveiled the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV, both built on a dedicated skateboard platform with electric quad-motor drive and over 400 miles of claimed range. The vehicles received immediate attention for their innovative gear tunnel, onboard air compressor, and camp kitchen accessory.
Rivian went public in November 2021 with one of the largest IPOs in history, valuing the company at over $100 billion at peak. The R1T entered production in late 2021 and won MotorTrend Truck of the Year in 2022, the first electric pickup to earn the award. Rivian also holds an exclusive contract with Amazon to build 100,000 electric delivery vans (EDV).
[Note: Rivian is a young company with limited production history. Production volumes and timelines have been subject to supply chain constraints. Financial losses have been substantial, and the company market valuation has fluctuated significantly since the IPO. Claims about future products and capabilities beyond what is currently in production should be treated as aspirational.]
The Rivian R1T was the first production electric pickup truck to market, beating the Ford F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck to production by approximately six months. It introduced the quad-motor architecture with independent torque vectoring at each wheel, enabling a tank-turn feature that rotates the vehicle around its center.
The Rivian skateboard platform integrated the battery pack, drive units, suspension, and braking systems into a flat, structural floor that is shared between the R1T and R1S. This platform is designed to be scalable for future vehicles including the smaller R2 platform.
The R1T gear tunnel, a pass-through storage compartment between the cab and the bed, was a distinctive innovation that made use of the space freed by eliminating a traditional drivetrain tunnel and fuel tank. It is long enough to store a full-size surfboard or camping gear.
[Note: The tank-turn feature that rotates the vehicle in place by counter-rotating wheels on each side was demonstrated in prototype form but has been controversial. Rivian has not confirmed it for production vehicles in consumer hands, and the feature may be limited to off-road use or may not be released at all.]
Rivian introduced an NACS adapter program in 2024, giving R1T and R1S owners access to the Tesla Supercharger network, and announced plans to adopt the NACS connector natively starting in 2025.
