DS began as the most luxurious trim level within Citroën's lineup, taking its name from the iconic 1955 Citroën DS, a car so advanced for its time that it was immediately hailed as a design and engineering masterpiece. In 2014, PSA Group elevated DS to a standalone premium brand, positioning it to compete with German luxury marques while retaining a distinctly French identity rooted in avant-garde design and comfort.
The DS brand launched with the DS 3, DS 4, and DS 5 models, which were effectively restyled and upgraded versions of existing Citroën platforms. The early lineup established DS's design language: intricate LED lighting, watch-strap-inspired upholstery, and a cabin focus that PSA called "the art of travel." The brand gradually moved onto dedicated platforms with the DS 7 Crossback (2017) and DS 9 (2020).
DS has struggled to achieve the sales volumes of its German rivals but has built a reputation for distinctive design and exceptional interior quality. The brand is accelerating toward electrification, with every new model offering a plug-in hybrid or pure-electric powertrain. DS remains part of Stellantis following the 2021 PSA-FCA merger, positioned as the group's French premium offering alongside the Italian premium of Maserati and the British premium of the former Jaguar Land Rover stablemates.
DS pioneered the use of "DS Active Scan Suspension," a camera-based system that reads the road ahead and pre-adapts suspension damping before the wheels encounter imperfections, delivering a uniquely smooth ride that references the original Citroën DS's legendary hydropneumatic suspension.
The brand's DS Matrix LED Vision headlight technology uses individual LED modules that can be switched on and off to provide full-beam illumination without dazzling oncoming traffic, combined with a swivelling function that follows the steering angle. [Uncertain: the exclusivity of this feature; similar matrix-LED systems are offered by Audi (Matrix LED) and Mercedes (Multibeam LED), though DS claims superior resolution.]
DS's cabin design philosophy introduced the "Brasília" leather upholstery with a distinctive watch-strap pattern, pearl-stitching, and "Clous de Paris" guilloche detailing on switchgear , borrowing from haute horlogerie and furniture design rather than typical automotive luxury conventions.
The original DS stunned the world with its aerodynamics, hydropneumatic suspension, and futuristic design. The name would later inspire the DS brand.
PSA Group elevated DS from a Citroën trim level to a separate luxury brand, positioned against German premium marques.
The first DS model built on a dedicated platform, establishing DS's distinctive design language and technology focus.
Following the PSA-FCA merger, DS became the French premium offering within the newly formed Stellantis group.
