What to Check Before Buying a Used Performance Car
A used Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette, or BMW M car can be a brilliant purchase. Performance cars depreciate faster than ordinary sedans in their first three years, which means a well-chosen example can offer near-new driving dynamics at a significant discount. But the same mechanical complexity that makes these cars thrilling also makes them expensive to fix.
The single most important check is service history. Performance cars are often driven hard, and the difference between a well-maintained example and a neglected one can be the cost of a new engine. Look for documented oil changes at the manufacturer-recommended intervals, evidence that major services (spark plugs, transmission fluid, differential fluid) were completed on time, and records of any track days or modifications. A car with a stack of dealer invoices is worth more than one with a clean Carfax and no service records.
Tires and brakes reveal a lot about how the previous owner treated the car. Check all four tires for uneven wear patterns, which can indicate alignment problems or suspension damage that was never addressed. Performance cars eat front brake rotors. If the rotors have a thick lip at the outer edge or show deep scoring, budget for replacements immediately. These are not cheap items on most performance platforms.
Pay attention to the clutch if the car is manual. A clutch that engages near the top of the pedal travel is likely worn. Listen for gearbox noises in every gear, especially synchromesh whine in second or third gear, which is a sign of hard, rushed shifts. For dual-clutch automatics, check for hesitation or jerking during low-speed parking maneuvers. Those are early warning signs of mechatronic unit issues that can cost thousands to repair.
Finally, get a pre-purchase inspection from a specialist who knows the specific model. A general mechanic will spot obvious problems but will miss model-specific failure points. A Porsche specialist, for example, will check the IMS bearing on a 996 or 997 generation 911 as a matter of course. Your regular garage might skip it entirely.
