Hybrids Explained: Mild, Full, and Plug-in
The word hybrid covers several quite different technologies, and the differences matter when you are choosing a car. All of them combine a petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor and a battery, but they split from there. Understanding the three main types makes it much easier to judge claims about fuel economy and to work out whether a hybrid is a stepping stone to a fully electric car or simply a more efficient combustion one.
A mild hybrid is the simplest and cheapest arrangement. The electric motor is small and cannot drive the car on its own; instead it helps the engine under acceleration and recovers energy when slowing down. The benefit is a modest reduction in fuel use, mostly in stop-start traffic, and it is often felt as smoother running rather than dramatic savings. A full hybrid, sometimes called a parallel or series hybrid, can move the car on electricity alone for short distances at low speed, with the engine starting when more power or range is needed. This is the technology that made the Toyota Prius famous, and it needs no plug: the battery recharges from the engine and from braking.
A plug-in hybrid has a much larger battery that can be charged from the mains, giving an electric-only range that covers many daily journeys. On longer trips the engine takes over, so there is no range anxiety. The catch is that the efficiency advantage depends entirely on how you use it. A plug-in hybrid that is regularly charged and driven mostly on short electric trips can use very little fuel; the same car driven without ever plugging in can be heavier and thirstier than a conventional hybrid, because it is carrying a large battery it is not using.
That makes the choice fairly practical. If you cannot charge at home or at work, a full hybrid is usually the better fit, since it delivers its gains without any change of habit. If you can charge conveniently and most of your journeys are short, a plug-in can cover them on electricity while still handling long trips.
