How Genesis Went From Unknown to Award-Winning in a Decade
Hyundai's decision to spin off Genesis as a separate luxury brand in 2015 was met with skepticism. Korean automakers had tried luxury before. The Hyundai Equus and earlier Genesis sedan were respectable vehicles, but they could not shake the perception that a Hyundai was a budget brand no matter how much leather you put inside.
The turning point was design. Genesis hired Luc Donckerwolke, a veteran of Bentley and Lamborghini, as Chief Creative Officer. His team developed the "Athletic Elegance" design language, characterized by a two-line lighting signature, a broad shield grille, and long, rear-wheel-drive proportions. The G80 and G90 sedans that launched in 2017 looked like nothing else on the road. They also drove better than comparable offerings from Lexus and Infiniti.
What truly elevated Genesis in the public consciousness was product quality. In 2022, the Genesis GV70 won the North American Utility of the Year award, beating the Ford Bronco and Kia EV6. The GV60 followed with strong critical reception. J.D. Power's 2024 Initial Quality Study ranked Genesis second overall among all brands, behind only Alfa Romeo, and above Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
Genesis still faces challenges. Brand awareness remains lower than Lexus and Cadillac in most global markets. The electric vehicle transition poses an existential question for a brand that invested heavily in internal combustion platforms in its early years. But for a brand that did not exist a decade ago, the trajectory is remarkable.
